The Biggest Roadblock to Potty Training
Mar 26, 2024We’ve been misled as parents when it comes to potty training. There is a plethora of programs and “potty experts” who will claim they can train your child to pee and poop in the potty in a few days.
Often, the families who need my help are the ones who have tried these programs and failed. So what went wrong?
With Gentle Potty Coaching, I take a holistic viewpoint and gather a plethora of information about the child and the child’s experience and personality. Sometimes it’s not so easy to pinpoint an exact moment.
The one common theme I see in many families today is that they are waiting to start the potty training process. Does that mean removing diapers as soon as your child turns 2 years old? No!
*Unpopular Opinion*
- Potty training is a process that requires the child to learn new skills.
- Potty learning is a more accurate phrase.
- Potty coaching is preferred because you are coaching your child through the process.
- You do not need to wait until your child shows interest.
- You can start as early as 18 months while keeping your child in diapers.
IDEA:
You can start the potty coaching process while your child is still in diapers! The process includes modeling, talking about pee and poop, building body awareness, and involving your child in the diaper change process.

TIP:
Two suggestions for young toddlers are:
- Purchase a floor potty and invite your child to sit on it - with or without a diaper.
- Have your child participate as much as possible during diaper changes. Change their diaper standing up, ask them to get a clean diaper, help flush the poop, Velcro the tabs etc.
