No Room for Play Room? When We Can't Have it All, Have it Small.

Feb 27, 2023

I wish I had a basement where I could send my 3 active, loud and spirited boys. I would shut the door, and then peacefully drink some coffee while reading the Sunday Times. I'm especially feeling it right now in the depth of winter, after waking up to a few inches of fresh snow layered upon the NYC streets.

Setting up a play space in an apartment needs creative thinking. What often ends up happening is the living room becomes the play room and the adults retreat to their bedroom for a more mature ambiance. So now that we've accepted that - how can we minimize the toy takeover?

Considerations:

  • Size of the toy/portability
  • Duration of use - avoid one and does!
  • Single user and/or multi-user
  • Support skill development
  • Allow for engagement not entertainment

My favorite materials for 3-6 year olds are often open-ended where the child can play independently. Check out my list of favorites by visiting my resource page. And if you have favorites put it in the comments or send me a note at [email protected]!
